Publication of reprints of the Revised Violin Books 1-3

Report date: 17 March 2009

The reprints of the Revised Volumes 1, 2, and 3 were completed and published in December 2008 by Alfred. They report that all stock in their warehouses are now of the most recent reprint.

The publication follows a great deal of work by all the ISA regional association violin committees, which made the necessary corrections to address issues in the first printings. There was also much help and input from individual teacher trainers in all regions. The publishers, Alfred, had taken care to limit the numbers of the first printing to allow for what the needed.

The reprints can be distinguished from the earlier versions by their ISBN numbers

  • Volume 1: 0-7579-0061-5
  • Volume 2: 0-7390-4812-0
  • Volume 3: 0-7390-4815-3

There are other differences as well:

  • Volume 1 now has a picture of Dr. Suzuki following the Foreword. The first printing has no picture.
  • Volume 2 now has 36 pages. The first printing had 38 pages and a blank page 25. There are no blank pages in the reprint.
  • Volume 3 now has revised text on vibrato instead of bullet points (a, b, c), and additional text in italics about ornamentation on page 12 as differentiated from the first printing.

The revised Piano Accompaniment  for Books 1, 2, and 3 are also now available

Violin Book 4 has been published

Report Date: 17 March 2009

The revised edition of Volume 4 of the Suzuki Violin School should now be available from music shops in Europe. This was also published in December 2008.

This revised edition includes the Bohm “Perpetual Motion”, which Dr. Suzuki had wanted to include in his original volume but for which the copyright permission could not be secured at the time.  It has a dual score of both parts for the Bach Double. This volume also includes suggested preparatory exercises for the Seitz Concerti and the Bach Double.

Errata
Please note two bowing misprints in the Practice Suggestions for the Bach Double Concerto on page 24:

  • Violin 2 (p. 27, mm. 40-41): The slur on the third beat in the first measure of the example should begin on the note D, not on the note E.

  •  Violin 2 (p. 29, mm. 75-76): There should be no slur on the first beat of the first measure.

The bowings in the corresponding main text of the Bach Double are correct.

The Volume 4 accompaniment book is due for printing by the end of March 2009.

Violin Book 5

Work was completed on the revised Volume 5 by the ISA Violin Committee in October 2008. The book is now in the process of being proof read before going to print sometime after the summer.

There are no changes to the repertoire in Volume 5, but there are some changes in fingerings and bowings to reflect more current performance practice and pedagogy. (See further details in the Reykjavik Report below)

William Preucil will be recording the revised edition of Book 5 in May 2009.

First published on new Violin Web page on 17 March 2009
Report from the meeting of the International Violin Committee held in Reykjavik, Iceland 4-6 October 2008

by Christophe Bossuat, Chair of the ISA violin Committee and Representative of the European Suzuki Association –November 2008

All five regions were represented (ASA by proxy only)
Asia Suzuki Association (ASA) – Asia, except Japan and Middle East
European Suzuki Association (ESA) – Europe, Africa and Middle East
Pan-Pacific Suzuki Association (PPSA) – Australia, New Zealand and Oceania
Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) North, Central and South America
Talent Education Research Institute (TERI) - Japan

Present at the meeting were also Gilda Barston as ISA Board Liaison and Paul Landefeld, ISA CEO.

The committee worked through the whole of book 5 in detail and also discussed books 6 up.

The committee members represent the consensus of their own region, where a lot of preparatory work is done before each meeting.  The committee works to reach a consensus of all five regions, but sometimes have to make decisions by majority votes.

New Edition of Book 5

Before we started detailed work, it was decided by
the majority (not unanimously) that the repertoire in this book should not be changed, neither adding nor removing pieces.  Each representative had worked carefully to get consensus from his own region.

Basic technical exercises to be worked on throughout the book will be presented at the beginning:

  • Tonalization with tone color differences using different bow placement.
  • Position Etude from 2d to 5th position.
  • Perpetual motion in 5th position and Changing string exercises 2nd part, the 1st being presented in book 4.
  • Three octave scales in G major and G melodic minor.

Two Gavottes by Bach

  • A few notes of ornamentations are modified based on research of the original work.
  • A number of double stops for both gavottes (drawn also from original work) will be added in parentheses so that the teachers will be able to choose for their students according to their ability.

Vivaldi A minor 2nd mvt

  • The Nachéz version has been kept.
  • Several different fingering propositions in a couple of places.
  • Specifically written ornamentations in the last three lines.
  • Two bowings changes in the last line.

Vivaldi G minor
1st mvt

  • Bowing changes at the end of the first page, in the second and in the third making it clearer for some sixteen note parts.
  • A few finger suggestions on the second and third page, making the piece less romantic but still singing.

2nd mvt

  • Up bow start decided, with some bowing changes in the 3rd and 4th line of the solo which will hopefully make the student remember the slurs better.
  • Also in line 5 and 6 different fingering propositions, and the same in the last line where we keep the four last bars in 1st position.
  • Often in the pieces there are suggestions of two different fingerings above and below.

3rd mvt:

  • Suggestions for different fingerings on all three pages
  • One bowing change on the third page.

Country Dance

  • Mainly fingering suggestions using the second position more in the fast articulated parts in the middle.

German Dance

  • Fingering suggestions but no bowing changes.

Veracini Gigue

  • Many bowing decisions drawn from research into the first edition of this work. These bowings relate more to the style of the gigue, thinking also of this piece as a preparation of the Bach a minor 3rd mvt.  A lot of this work was contributed by the American and Japanese committees

Bach Double

  • The new edition will present both parts printed in both book 4 and book 5, with an emphasized printing of the 2nd violin part in Book 4 and of the  1st violin part in Book 5.
  • A few fingering suggestions here with just one bowing change at the end of the first theme, as also in book 4.

New editions of Book 6 and up

Some major decisions have been taken.

  • Most of the regions wanted to keep the repertoire as it is, preserving Dr Suzuki’s legacy.
  • The exception was the SAA who had prepared substantial changes and also relevant proposals for change of the repertoire for these books (as well and also book 5, most of the regions want to keep the repertoire as it stands.
  • After intense discussion, especially with the Japanese and Australian representatives, and after a vote it was decided not to add any cello pieces to the Suzuki violin repertoire.

So the main emphasis for book 6 and 7 will be to work on a more baroque version of the Handel sonatas and Bach a minor, considering also that we will keep a classic bow in the Suzuki pedagogy.

The Japanese committee is already working on this.  I would like the European committee to work on this also so that we take with us to the next meeting the most suitable version with possibly very minor changes.

Other pieces in book 6 and 7 are not much of an issue.

Corrections to Books 1-3

While there is strong commitment to continue working with the new editions for books 6, 7 and beyond, the International Violin Committee and the publishers are united in their wish to ensure that the necessary corrections are made to the early books.  So we will hurry slowly and continue to improve the other books as much as we can.
Corrections to book 1and 2 are continuing , with the cooperation of many people around the world.

Thank you for reading this message and thanks to all those teachers and teacher trainers in our region who have contributed and continue to contribute to this work.
